What does BMW stand for

BMW has become synonymous with luxury vehicles and motorcycles, with a reputation that has been well deserved over the years. BMW is an abbreviation of the company name, which is Bayerische Motoren Werke in German, but when translated, it means Bavarian Motor Works. BMW, along with Mercedes-Benz, happens to be the most popular and prestigious German automobile manufacturers in the world.

bmwBMW as it is known today started in 1913 and has gone through several iterations, most notably as switching from an aircraft engine supplier to a full-time car and motorcycle company. In recent years, BMW has gained the rights to manufacture the Rolls-Royce car line, which has been one of the most sought after names in luxury cars for many years.

Cars produced by BMW are not given a name like other car brands, instead, they are classified into a series. BMW’s current line up consists of the 3, 6, and 7 series of cars, which range from mid-sized to full-sized luxury sedans. The higher the series, the more luxurious the car. In addition to their cars, BMW has been a great name in motorcycles as well, with their early model which was conceived in the 1920s holding many of the world speed records for bikes all the way through the 1930s.

This world-class reputation is what has earned BMW the right to call itself a producer of ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’, which extends over from their luxury car line, into their motorcycle line.
